How To Make Stir Fried Cabbage With Fennel Seed

We grew a couple cabbage plants in our garden this year and as a result we had a lot of cabbage to use up. Stir Fried Cabbage With Fennel Seeds is a great way to do that, although it only uses 1/4 head of cabbage. The fennel seed and garam masala give it a unique and interesting flavor. I suppose this would usually be a side dish but we’ve had it as a main a few times and it was great.

This recipe is naturally gluten free.

Ingredients For Stir Fried Cabbage With Fennel Seed

  • 1/4 Head Cabbage
  • 3 Tbls Ghee or Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Fennel Seeds
  • 1 tsp Sesame Seeds
  • 1 Large Onion
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Cayenne
  • 1 Tbls Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 tsp Garam Masala

Cut the Cabbage and Onion

We’ll start by cutting our cabbage. Cut the head into quarters and then cut the heart from one quarter with a diagonal cut.

Lay the cabbage on its side and cut long strips as thin as you can get them. Peel the onion and cut it in half and then slice it thinly.

Melt Ghee In A Large Skillet

We start with the oil in the pan. I am using Ghee to get more flavor into the dish but you can use oil. Ghee is not that difficult to make. You cook butter with spices for a while, which clarifies it. Then you strain it off and you have Ghee. Since it doesn’t have the milk solids it has a higher burn temperature than regular butter, plus it smells so good when you cook with it. We have a video of how to make Ghee on our Youtube Channel here.

Cook Cumin Seeds, Fennel Seeds and Sesame Seeds

Add the Cumin Seed, Fennel Seed and Sesame Seeds to the oil and cook them until the Sesame Seeds start to pop. You’ll want to stir this to keep it from burning.

Add Onion To the Pan

Next the onion goes into the pan. Give this a good stir and cover it to help sweat the onions. Cook this for about 5 minutes until the onions start to brown. We want to end up with the onions fairly caramelized and this will get that started.

Photo shows the onions cooked in the skillet.

Add the Cabbage

Add the Cabbage. It might fill the pan but it will cook down so don’t worry. Stir everything as best you can and cover the pan. It will get easier to stir as it cooks down.

Add Salt and Cayenne, Garam Masala and Lemon Juice

Cook it for about 6 minutes and then add the Salt and Cayenne. Give it a good stir and cook for 10 more minutes. Add the Lemon Juice and Garam Masala, give it a good stir and the dish is ready to serve. Garam Masala is an interesting addition with the Cabbage. It is a spice combination identified with India but everybody makes it a little differently and it can be signature of a household with their unique blend.
