Mango Margarita

A Mango Margarita is a great drink to make when you have access to fresh mangos. The lush tropical flavor of a mango is the perfect accompaniment to tequila and citrus. We used to be fortunate to be able to rent a beautiful house in Hawaii back before the price of everything in Hawaii went sky high. There was a mango tree in the backyard and we’d try to time our stay for when the mangos were ripe. Yum!

We see a lot of mangos in Mexico as well. Some of the rentals have a blender, which is necessary for this beverage.

Ingredients For A Mango Margarita

Mango Puree:

  • 1 1/2 Cups Mango pieces
  • 1/4 Cup Orange Juice

Margarita:

  • 1 1/2 ox Mango Puree
  • 1 oz Simple Syrup
  • 1 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • 1 1/2 oz Cointreau or Triple Sec
  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 3/4 cup Ice

How To Cut A Mango

First we have to cut our mangos. They have a wide side and a narrow side. The seed is narrow and runs right down the middle. Looking at the narrow side, start with the knife right in the middle and pull a bit to the right when you feel the seed. Try to work down as close to the seed as you can and then repeat for the other side. You can take the skin off the seed and just dig in and eat the fruit that’s attached to the seed. Best do this over the sink though as it gets pretty messy.

For each half of the mango, cut vertical and horizontal stripes almost all the way through the flesh but don’t cut through the skin. You’ll be making cubes about an inch in size. Bend the mango half backwards and the cubes pop up for easy access. Take these off and put them in the blender.

Blend Mango With Orange Juice

Get about 1 1/2 cups of mango meat in the blender and add 1/4 cup of orange juice. Blend that up and you’ll have your mango puree for the margarita.

Start With Simple Syrup

Now we can assemble our margarita. If you have a cocktail shaker, use it. Otherwise, a jar with a lid will work just fine. We have been known to bring a shaker when we travel but sometimes a jar is the best we can do. Add 1 ounce of simple syrup to your shaker. Simple Syrup is really easy to make. Put one cup of water and one cup of sugar in a pan, bring to a boil until all the sugar melts and let it cool. You can also add other flavors to your simple syrup but that’s a recipe for another time.

Lime Juice

Add 1 1/2 ounces of lime juice. We squeeze a bunch of limes into a jar so we have lime juice ready for cocktails. It’s very handy!

Mango Puree

Next up is 1 1/2 ounces of the mango puree.

Cointreau

Add 1 1/2 ounces of Cointreau or Triple Sec, whichever you have available. It’s a little better with Cointreau but some places we travel Triple Sec is a lot less expensive. At home it is always Cointreau.

Tequila

Don’t forget the tequila! 2 ounces of a blanco or reposado tequila for the shaker. Don’t waste an anejo on this unless it’s all you have.

Ice

Add ice to the shaker, about an equal volume as the liquid or slightly less.

Shake Well

Put the lid on the shaker and shake fairly vigorously, enough to blend. The mango puree is pretty thick so it needs a good shake.

Optional Salt Rim

Salt the rim of your pint glass if you want, but remember that it is totally acceptable to have a margarita without the salt rim if you prefer. Or mix it up and have one with and one without. Who cares? You need to pour your salt into a flat dish or container with room for the rim of your glass. Use course Kosher salt. It is a bigger grain than table salt and will be more enjoyable. Flake salt is really good but it’s harder to get it to stick. Run a wedge of lime around the rim of the glass to wet it and then dip it into your salt. Another technique is to roll the rim through the salt. This is how you get salt further down the outside of the glass.

Pour Everything Into A Glass

Pour the contents of the shaker, ice and all, into a glass with a salted rim.

Mango Margarita In A Pint Glass

We like to use a pint glass for this project. You could use two rocks glasses and share it with a friend and then make another or 2 or 3. We’re not big fans of the chalice style glasses for margaritas as they are more difficult to drink from.
