Ingredients For Shrimp Salad With Thousand Island Dressing
For the Dressing:
- 1/2 Cup Mayonnaise
- 2 Tbls Sweet Relish
- 2 Tbls Ketchup
- 1 tsp White Vinegar
- 3 shakes Tabasco Sauce
- 1 shake of Worcestershire Sauce
- 1/4 Cup Red Onion, very finely chopped
- 1 tsp Garlic, minced
- Pinch of Salt
For the salad:
- 1 Head Romaine or other lettuce, chopped
- 2 Tomatoes, sliced
- 2 Hard Boiled Eggs
- 2 Cups Salad Shrimp
Make the Thousand Island Dressing:
We’ll start this quick and easy recipe by putting the mayonnaise in a small mixing bowl. We like Duke’s mayonnaise but you can use whatever you prefer. You can use light mayonnaise if you’re watching the calories.
Sweet Relish
We think that pickles are kind of the star of this recipe and we like the sweet pickle relish for the combination of tang and sweetness. You can experiment with other kinds of relish for different flavor profiles.
Ketchup
Thousand Island Dressing is one of the few things we use ketchup for here in the 2 Cooks kitchen. We haven’t found a substitution for it in this recipe, it’s just an essential flavor.
Vinegar
To add a little more tang we will use a teaspoon of white vinegar. You could use apple cider vinegar here if you want but we don’t really need the fruitiness here.
Tabasco
We’ll add a few shakes of Tabasco sauce to give our dressing a little heat. If you are making a traditional shrimp or crab louie you can add some horseradish as well.
Worcestershire Sauce
We’ll also add a generous shake of worcestershire sauce. This is the secret sauce that elevates so many recipes with its umami flavor.
Red Onion
Next we’ll add our chopped red onion. We want this chopped fairly small so there aren’t any large chunks in our dressing.
Garlic and Salt
We can’t make thousand island dressing without a little bit of garlic. This dressing shouldn’t be garlic forward like so many recipes we love so we’re just adding a little bit.
Mix
We’ll finish with a pinch of salt and then mix our dressing well. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving to let the flavors marry. That’s it for the dressing.
Lettuce and Tomato
Next we’ll put our lettuce and tomatoes into salad bowls. We make a dinner size salad every other day so this recipe is for 2 large salads. You can easily split this into four smaller salads. We are using romaine lettuce because we really enjoy how crunchy it can be. You can use any lettuce you like.
Cut the Eggs
Now we need to cut the eggs. You can just cut them into slices and distribute those over the salad. We like to slice them with our egg slicer and then slice them again the opposite way so we have smaller pieces of egg.
Then we’ll put those on the salads.
Add the Dressing
We like our shrimp on top of the dressing so we’ll put the dressing on next.
Add the Shrimp
Next we’ll pile the shrimp on in the center of the salads.
Salt and Pepper
Then we finish the salads with a sprinkle of salt and pepper and we are ready to serve.
