The 2 Cooks have been adding Chipotle to things this year – both the dried and the canned varieties. Here’s an easy Chipotle Ranch Dressing and Dip we whipped up for a taco salad. The leftovers made a great chip dip.
Chipotle
The chipotle for this recipe came in a can. We use a little and freeze the remainder of the can in 2 tablespoon chunks. Then we can just get out one of those chunks for this recipe.

The Ingredients For Chipotle Ranch Dressing
- 1/2 Cup Buttermilk
- 1/2 Cup Sour Cream
- 1 Tbls Chipotle
- 1/4 Cup Cilantro, packed
- 1/2 Tsp Cumin
- 1/2 Tsp Garlic Granules
- 1/2 Tsp Salt
- 1/4 Tsp Oregano
- 2 Tsp Lime Juice
Put Sour Cream and Buttermilk In the Food Processor
This can be made in a food processor or blender. We have a small food processor that is perfect for jobs such as this. We’ll just put 1/2 cup of buttermilk and then 1/2 cup of sour cream right into the blender for starters.
Add Chipotle
Then we’ll add the chipotle to the food processor. We usually have found chipotle with adobo sauce in a can. We use a little of it for a recipe and then we freeze the rest of the can in two tablespoon chunks for later use. That is about the equivalent of one chipotle. You can add as much or as little as you’d like, depending on how spicy you want your dressing. We have recently started seeing chipotles in a glass jar, which is even more convenient.
Add the Cilantro
Chop up the cilantro and then add 1/4 cup to the food processor. Pack it into the measuring cup so you get a full amount.
Add Cumin
After adding the cilantro add a healthy 1/2 teaspoon of cumin to the food processor. This spice complements the chipotle nicely.
Add garlic granules or garlic powder to the food processor. We started using garlic granules because the garlic powder would always cake up so hard we couldn’t get it out of the spice jar. The garlic granules are much easier to deal with.
Salt and Oregano
Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and then 1/4 teaspoon of oregano. You can use Mexican oregano here but it’s not necessary.
Squeeze Lime Juice
Add 2 teaspoons of lime juice. We squeeze a bunch of limes at once into a half pint jar and then keep it in the refrigerator to use in recipes.
Pulse the Chipotle Ranch Dressing until it is very smooth. This makes a delicious salad dressing or a dip for chips or vegetables.
