How To Make Cannabis Gummies

Cannabis Gummies

We show you how to make your own cannabis gummies at home. This can be very handy if you grow a plant or two or if you just want to make gummies from your favorite strain of flowers. You will know just what is in them! It is difficult to get the dosage absolutely perfect since there are several variables in that regard but we have found that with this recipe they come out fairly consistent.

Cannabis is legal in many parts of the world. We are in no way advising anyone to partake if it is not legal where you live.

This recipe is naturally gluten free.

Decarboxylation

THC is the active ingredient in our cannabis flower. In order to activate the THC we need to heat it up. We call this process decarboxylation. We’ll be heating our cannabis flower to 203 degrees for 90 minutes. The best way we have found to do this accurately is with a Sous Vide machine.

Sous Vide

Sous vide is a cooking technique where we submerge our food, or in this case our flower, in water at a precise temperature for a precise period of time. The sous vide machine takes care of keeping the water at a constant temperature. We’ll put our cannabis flower in a sealed, waterproof pouch and submerge it in 203 degree water for 90 minutes.

Grind the Cannabis Flower

Once we have decarboxylated our cannabis flower we’ll put it in the spice grinder and grind it up. We want to get it ground fairly well so it will infuse into the oil better.

Coconut Oil Infusion

We are going to infuse some oil with our cannabis flower which will get the THC into the oil in a liquid form. We like to use coconut oil for this but you could use any vegetable oil. We’ll put the coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds to melt it before adding the flower. This is very much like steeping tea except we want to do this at a steady temperature of 180 degrees for 4 hours. Once again our sous vide machine will be perfect for this job. To keep the water out of our oil and cannabis mixture we will put it in a half-pint sealed jar. The jar will sink to the bottom of the sous vide water nicely and stay submerged.

Infused Oil

After four hours in the sous vide bath our oil will be infused with the cannabis flower. We now have oil with THC, a bit of chlorophyll coloring and a little flavor of the flower itself.

Strain the Oil

Next we want to strain the oil to remove the bits of flower. We use a cocktail strainer with a piece of cheesecloth in it to accomplish this.

Strain the Oil

Once the oil has passed through the strainer we will squeeze everything we can out of the cheesecloth. Now we have our THC infused oil ready to make our gummies.

Combine Oil and Water

We’ll start with 1/2 cup of our infused oil and 1/2 cup of water in a small saucepan over medium low heat. We are trying to mix the oil and water and we need an emulsifying agent to do that. Sunflower Lecithin will act as that agent that allows our oil and water molecules to bond to each other. We’ll keep stirring it as the pan heats up and you will see the ingredients combine and become one thing.

Oil, Water and Lecithin Separate

It’s important to keep stirring as this heats up and we don’t want it to boil. In a short time you will see it all become one homogenized thing.

Flavored Gelatin

Once our oil and water are combined we will add in our flavored gelatin. You can use the Jello brand or any other brand you want. We’ll whisk this in thoroughly so we don’t get any lumps.

Unflavored Gelatin

Next we will whisk in 2 tablespoons of unflavored gelatin. This will help our cannabis gummies have a little more solidity and maintain their shape. Whisk this in well to avoid lumps.

Cook 10 To 15 Minutes

Now we need to cook this, stirring constantly for 10 to 15 minutes until everything has dissolved and the mixture begins to thicken. You need to be careful that this doesn’t boil.

Strain

Working quickly we will strain the mixture one more time to make sure there are no lumps. We strain it through a cocktail strainer into a measuring cup. That way we have it all ready to pour into our molds.

Strain The Mixture

Fill The Gummie Molds

Now we need to pour this into the gummie molds. We’ll need to work quickly so the gelatin doesn’t set before we get done. We use a gummie mold that holds one teaspoon exactly. It can be difficult to find molds that actually say how much volume they hold but that is important for establishing a consistent dosage. 1 Teaspoon is equal to 5 mililiters. We put the mold trays in a baking pan or on a cookie sheet to make it easier to transport.

Freeze Your Cannabis Gummies For 30 Minutes

Now we will put the cannabis gummies into the freezer for 30 minutes. At the end of that time they will be thoroughly set.

Storage

You will need to keep your cannabis gummies in the refrigerator or freezer since we haven’t added any preservatives to them. We keep ours in the freezer so they’ll last a long time. If you keep them in the refrigerator you’ll probably want to wrap them individually in parchment paper to keep them from sticking to each other. We just take a square of the paper and give the ends a salt water taffy twist.

Dosage

Our dosage is going to vary a little from one batch of gummies to the next. There are too many variables for us to be able to be exact. Starting with 3.5 grams of flower and using a one teaspoon mold our gummies are consistently close to 5 milligrams of THC. We are total lightweights and we split one gummy. You could double the amount of flower, keep everything else the same and make gummies that are about 10 milligrams each. With any edible it is important to try a small amount first to determine the correct dosage for each person. There are many stories out there that tell us that too high a dosage can be uncomfortable and unsettling so proceed with caution.

  • 1/8 oz (3.5 g) Cannabis Flower
  • 3/4 cup Coconut Oil
  • 1/2 tsp Sunflower or Soy Lecithin
  • 2 oz Unflavored Gelatin
  • 1 Package (3 oz) Flavored Gelatin (Jello)

Instructions

  1. Decarboxylate the cannabis flower. Using a Sous Vide Precision Cooker, heat the flower to 203 degrees fahrenheit for 90 minutes. Put the flower into a sealed bag and make sure it stays completely submerged in the sous vide bath.
  2. Put the cannabis flower into a spice grinder and grind it up.
  3. Infuse the oil. Put 3/4 cup of coconut oil and the ground cannabis flower into a half pint jar with a lid. Stir well. Put the jar into the sous vide bath at 180 degrees fahrenheit for 4 hours.
  4. Strain the infused oil through cheesecloth to remove the plant material.
  5. Put 1/2 cup infused oil and 1/2 cup water into a small saucepan on medium low heat. Add 1/2 teaspoon of sunflower lecithin. Whisk and heat until it is all combined. DO NOT LET IT BOIL!
  6. Add the flavored and unflavored gelatin. Cook on low heat for 10 to 15 minutes stirring constantly until it starts to thicken.
  7. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a measuring cup or something with a pour spout.
  8. Pour the liquid into gummy molds.
  9. Put in the freezer for 30 minutes.
  10. Remove the gummies from the molds. Store in the freezer or wrap in parchment paper and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
